Yaupon, Theobromine and your Telomeres
Researchers at King’s College London just published findings in the Aging research journal showing “Theobromine is associated with slower epigenetic ageing." In particular, they found that regular consumption of theobromine is associated with increased telomere length in healthy individuals. You may recognize theobromine as the main active ingredient in chocolate, often considered a mood-booster, heart-opener and aphrodisiac. If you don’t recognize telomeres, though, you’re not alone. The Nobel Prize was given for their discovery just 15 years ago.
Telomeres serve as both “caps” and “signals” on every one of our DNA strands. They protect each strand from splitting apart at the ends, and they help our cells figure out where to start the repairs when DNA does get damaged. Recent research indicates “biological age” can be accurately predicted by telomere lengths in our cells. This has already started a trend of longevity seekers exploring ways to increase their telomere length.
While the study authors and doctors recognize the power of theobromine, they do not recommend increasing chocolate intake because it contains high levels of sugar, and sometimes heavy metals. Fortunately, theobromine is also found in high concentrations in yaupon. Yaupon offers a convenient, low sugar option that is also free of contaminants often found in coffee and chocolate.
A cup of yaupon keeps the telomeres long!*
